Religious Ed Students Give $460 to Mexican Mission, May 2015

The 140 students of St. Patrick’s Religious Education were given mite boxes at the beginning of Lent, to be filled with sacrificial offerings for the foreign missions.

Thank you to the 118 students who returned the mite boxes with $460 and to director Rosa Gomez, who coordinated the project. The Society of the Propagation of the Faith in the Diocese of Brooklyn, which provides the mite boxes, allows participating parishes to earmark the funds to a mission of its choice, provided that the money is used for service of children. Mrs. Gomez and I have decided to give the $460 to Apoyo a la Formacion a los Ninos Miztecos, a unique educa- tional program administered by Father Giovanni Manco, a PIME missionary from Italy, at Señora del Carmen Parish in La Concordia in the state of Guerrero, Mexico, about 180 miles inland from the city of Acapulco.

Apoyo is an afterschool and weekend program which serves more than 200 children between the ages of 6 and 15. The indigenous children need tutoring and extra classes in Spanish because they speak only Mizteco, an Indian dialect, at home. The public schools they attend in the area conduct all classes in Spanish, and the Mizteco children have difficulty learning in classes conducted in a second language, Spanish, with which they have limited ability. The teachers of Apoyo are volunteers, but Father Giovanni told me he needs the funds to help pay for school supplies and other costs. Envelopes are available in the vestibules for parishioners who would like to contribute to Apoyo.

On Sunday June 30th, after the 10:30am Mass the cultural festival opened its doors to give the opportunity to the whole parish and the community to try the delicious food from different countries that were showcased in the event. The festival had workshops for kids and adults alike, learning to paint using coffee. There were showcases of the art pieces created with the coffee, pencil, and the work of professional artists. We also had face painting (for kids), and piñatas for both the big kids (adults) and smaller kids. We had games for parents to play with their children and experience the value of family. We presented many singers, and folkloric groups. With the help of the church we were able to make this event possible. This was our first time doing the cultural festival and we will continue to make this event yearly as the community of St Patricks Church comes and join us. All funds that were collected are to be used to provide better service in the organization Brandworkers. An organization that defend workers rights so they have a just work environment. The family of the workers are so happy and appreciate those who came to this event, bringing their families and having a good time with them. ”
